A tract in Shideler Plaza Subdivision No. 4, the hotel is located on the west side of SW Arvonia Pl. and SW Huntoon St.  The Hilton is a 3-story 120 room hotel with a 4000 square foot attached convention center.  Located at one of the busiest intersection in Topeka, the City of Topeka Engineering Department required a traffic impact analysis to be performed to analyze the impact to the Huntoon/Arvonia intersection and surrounding street connections. An additional design challenge is the 45-foot vertical change in elevation that required retaining walls to be included in the design to manage the grade change.  Civil engineering support included site development plans comprising of site geometrics, grading, stormwater management, utilities, erosion control and public sanitary sewer extension plans.  Surveying support included boundary and topographic survey, subdivision platting and coordination with KDOT for permitting.  Project is in the construction phase and scheduled to open in 2017.

Topeka Baptist Church - Topeka, KS
Topeka Baptist Church
Located in the southwest area of Topeka, the Topeka Baptist Church was ready to expand. Steady growth had them looking for additional parking. It also seemed like a good time to consider moving from the multi-purpose area where they had been holding Sunday services to a new sanctuary addition. SBB engaged in a series of discussions with the pastor and volunteers from the congregation to explore their plan for expansion. The topography of the site created some challenges for connecting the existing parking lot to a new parking lot facility, as well as the connection of a new sanctuary addition. Because of the extreme change in elevation across the site, the new addition’s floor elevation is18 feet below the existing building. A series of steps and retaining walls were utilized to connect the two areas and ensure the stability of the existing site. Stormwater was a major concern because of the natural springs present in the hillside and the gradient across the site. SBB incorporated a series of inlets and pipes to capture stormwater then releasing into an engineered swale and retention pond designed to help meet newly implemented City policies for treatment of stormwater. The completed project has provided the Topeka Baptist Church functional use of site with truly distinctive design elements. Project was completed in 2013.

SE Colorado Ave.
SE Colorado Ave. (between SE 26th & SE 29th St.) - Topeka, KS

Civil engineering support included street construction plans comprising of street geometrics, grading (plan & profile), stormwater management, utilities, erosion control, traffic control and construction sequencing.  Surveying support included establishing right-of-way limits, topographic survey, and construction staking. Project was completed in 2015.
